Le Monde c’est prêt. A preview of the restaurant and bar’s upcoming grand opening, in Sukhumvit Soi 39.

Launched with a soft opening in mid-February of this year, Monde (555/27 Sukhumvit Soi 39, Bangkok, 085 009 6508, www.facebook.com/mondeofficial) is one of the new additions to those areas where people who can’t find space in the overpopulated Thong Lor are moving.
The bar is located on the rooftop of a newly finished five-story building, where mainly Japanese restaurants are popping up. Despite its proximity to the main roads, the area is quiet and is a perfect place to chill with friends. With its wide open setting and simple décor, this restaurant is a haven from a bustling city and a place where you can take time out to enjoy with friends and family and tuck into good drink and simple food.
Embracing the simplicity of food in a relaxed environment is the idea behind Monde. You sit on a large, comfy couch, enjoy some snack food while waiting for your cocktail, and chat with your friends.
In this peaceful space, an inviting sushi bar will be opened to expand the food selection. Coming from the elevator, you will see on the opposite side of the rooftop the main bar, which is flanked by two gazebos, where you can sit and enjoy one of the 40 different flavors of shisha.
The drink menu, the wine list, and the food menu are large enough for a newly opened venue, stretching from Thai food to international cuisine. My advice is to try the stir-fried tofu in tamarind sauce, one of the best choices, although not really particular to Monde’s menu. The restaurant manager and the kitchen staff are working to design a new menu with a personal touch and a sharper focus on Japanese food.
The signature cocktails are usually light and sweet, apt for the young audience of university students who was filling up the bar when I was there. If you are a fan of strawberries, you will love the Soju Strawberry.
Acoustic live music is onstage every night from 9 p.m. to midnight, and until 1:30 a.m. on weekends.
Monde is still a work in progress and is defining its true soul but, for sure, the scene and the venue will make this place the perfect spot for chill hangouts and weekly catch-ups with friends and family.
Monde’s grand opening is scheduled for July or August.
Open Monday to Sunday from 5:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.
