Great Alternative for a Casual Meal

/  RESTAURANTS + BARS   /  Great Alternative for a Casual Meal

Tucked down a dead-end residential lane just off of tree-lined Soi Convent, Pigwit is vying for the best place to get a sandwich or salad during the Bangkok workweek.

Operating out of a townhouse near BNH Hospital and just 100m from the intersection with busy Sathorn Road, the casual location is surprisingly quiet, complemented only by a fountain and the occasional singing of birds nesting in the large tree on the property. A wooden pig sign hangs out front marking the location. Seating is limited (only 12 seats at present) in the plant-lined outdoor space kept cool by fans swinging overhead. The décor is spare but the space feels comfortable because of the greenery and its insulation from the hustle and bustle of traffic just a short distance away.

Pigwit started as a delivery/catering operation and much of its activity continues to be in this vein providing food to businesses for meetings and events and delivering out to customers. The menu is simple and focuses on sandwiches served on crisp baguette bread as well as organic green salads. While some suggestions are offered for salads, you also have the option to design your own from an extensive list of toppings. NY-style bagels (boiled in water first, then baked) and a selection of homemade cookies plus simple desserts (such as the cocoa brownie) rounds out the menu. The cookies, bagels and bread are baked fresh each day. The condiments and some of the ingredients such as the bacon are made in-house. Depending on what time you drop by you might be able to sample a cookie straight from the oven.

After placing your order at the small counter inside and taking a seat outside you are given some crunchy salt and cracked pepper bagel chips while you wait for your sandwich. Sandwiches are presented attractively but plated simply with a small snickerdoodle (soft, cinnamon and sugar) cookie.

From the sandwich menu our group sampled their best-selling chicken adobo, salami and the vegetarian chickpea offering. The chicken adobo, an interpretation of the famous Filipino dish, had a base of rich tender braised chicken on a black chili mayonnaise spread and was topped with caramelized onions and roasted tomatoes. The salami was a bit more understated and featured an enjoyable combination of a Kalamata olive tapenade, salami and basil. The chickpea had a bright, fresh taste owing to the roasted red peppers, preserved lemon and olives that accompanied it. The cookie and brownie desserts we sampled had rich, layered chocolate flavor.

The walk-in space is recently opened and we are told that extremely busy times can have the kitchen slow down a bit. Hopefully as Pigwit grows they can keep the wait times reasonable during even the busiest periods. They are a welcome addition to the lunchtime scene and a great alternative for a casual meal or your next lunch meeting.
